Hi! I’m Jen, I write queer books. Stacks & Spoons is where I talk about books, sapphic culture, disability, and more. Subscribe for free here.
It’s the coziest time of year.
Throw on a warm coat, pick up a pumpkin spice latte and apple cider doughnut from the local coffee shop, and wander through Central Park and watch the leaves fall. Or, you could just snuggle up under a blanket on the couch and put on a Nora Ephron movie.
But what about us queers who want Ephron vibes in a gay way? Where’s our sapphic Meg Ryan? Our bisexual Tom Hanks?
I’ve scoured the stores, feeds, and lists to find queer, cozy romances that would make great Nora Ephron movies.
You, Again by Kate Goldbeck
This book will remain on queer fall book lists until the end of time, as it should! The cover says it all, You, Again is the ultimate bisexual When Harry Met Sally.
Pumpkin Spice by Tagan Shepard
An awkward gay aunt who has sworn-off love and a butch hottie who runs the town’s pumpkin patch? Say no more!
Truly, Madly, Deeply by Alexandria Bellefleur
A romance novelist and divorce lawyer are forced to team up on a podcast to offer relationship advice – this has Nora Ephron written all over it.
Read Between The Lines by Rachel Lacey
This one is for the You’ve Got Mail fans. An NYC bookstore owner falls for the romance novelist she’s been flirting with online, only to discover the property developer set to close her store is the author’s family business.
Not Just Gal Pals by Elizabeth Luly
An influencer retreats to her hometown after being ‘almost canceled,’ and swears off romance. The town’s only doctor (and local hot lumberjane) moved back to avoid getting her heart broken. But things change when they team up to help a friend.
Fall Into You by Georgina Kiersten
A runaway bride starts fresh in a small town, where she bumps into her childhood best friend. But this time, it may not just be friendship they spark.
I'll Have What He's Having by Adib Khorram
A case of mistaken identity leads to a fling, then an agreement to help each other professionally—as long as they can keep their hands off each other.
Tell the Senate: Arms Embargo Now!
A majority of Americans support a permanent ceasefire, hostage exchange, and arms embargo. Call or email your senator and tell them to support the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and call for an immediate arms embargo with Israel.
And when you vote…
Remember to vote down the ballot! The Presidential race is in the spotlight because it gets the most ratings and clicks, but the smaller races are just as important. As we’ve seen, a Democratic President is limited in power if the House and/or Senate has a Republican majority–and vice versa! (SCOTUS picks must be approved by the Senate, for example.) Local races for council members, school boards, and mayors deserve your vote, too. Politics start locally.
If you’re overwhelmed, that’s because it’s overwhelming by design. Your vote is powerful, which is why the people in power make it so difficult for you to exercise it. To help, Vote Save America has a new Build Your Own Ballot tool to walk you through it, including brief explainers of candidates and policies on your ballot. (This isn’t an ad, btw. I just really want everyone to vote down the ballot.)
Yes! Nora Ephron but make it queer! I feel like you just handed me a warm spiced cider and whispered, “Made specially for you!”
Love these suggestions, thanks!
