Happy Pride!
I love queer books. I adore queer books. I’M OBSESSED WITH QUEER BOOKS.
But you know what I love even more than queer books?
CHEAP QUEER BOOKS!
If you’re part of the Stacks & Spoons community, then there’s a very high chance you love queer books too. Also, you’re probably super gay.
Shouting about wonderful queer books is something I do all year round, but this month I wanted to start a new tradition here on my lil substack: rounding up some of the LGBTQ+ book sales, deals and coupons. And what better time to start than Pride!
Below you’ll find a list of new titles I’m excited about, all but one come with a coupon code from Bookshop.org. Then I list five queer Kindle deals that you gotta be quick to grab. (Full disclosure: if you use my bookshop.org link, I get a portion of the sale and it is much appreciated! But I never shout out any book I’m not excited about.)
I really wanted to write more today. I wanted to talk about how scary it is to be queer right now, how we need our straight friends and family to speak up and show up literally every day, because the bigots sure aren’t taking a day off. But I’ve had a migraine all day and my energy levels are low, so I’ll just say this…
To our allies: Your cishet privilege – especially those with white cishet privilege – means that your words hold more power than ours. It’s not fair but I’m just being real. And as Uncle Ben said, with great power comes great responsibility. Use it with your friends who make homophobic or transphobic “jokes,” use it by showing up at your local Pride event or council meeting to defend trans kids or challenged books, use it by supporting queer creators…just please use it.
To my queer fam: remember you can show up to pride however you like. There’s a lot of pressure to hit the streets, the bars, party after party, but if that’s not you (or if it’s just not accessible or safe for you), I see you. I’m with you.
What are you doing for Pride?
I’ll be celebrating pride by reading gay books, watching Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies, and having a Vanderpump Rules marathon with my wife, as the introverted gay gods intended.
